Projects

Athboy Tidy Towns has been active on many projects over the years. Some have been in association with other groups in the town (in the very successful “Adopt a Plot”). Many are complete but need annual maintenance and others are “continual improvement” projects.

Some of the projects listed are:

  • Spiral bed: Situated at the junction of the Delvin Road & Kildalkey Road.

  • Barrack Lane: Runs from by the Bank of Ireland to the river at the Metal Bridge.

  • River Bank area: Extensive underground sewage/water service work was completed her a few years ago (by the Metal Bridge). We have restored it to it’s former glory.

  • The Pound Garden: Butterfly/Bee friendly garden by the side of the Metal Bridge

  • Thornton’s Garden: At the junction of Lower Bridge Street & the road to Coille Dios.

  • Alpha Building: The old Community School in front of the new Secondary School.

  • Heritage Garden: In front of the Farmer’s Market opposite the road to the Hill of Ward. Athboy Heritage group completely transformed this area.

  • Vacant 2 story house: In between the McCann & Byrne sites.

  • Street flower displays: Along the Main Street, near the R.C. church and all approach roads.

  • Wildlife projects: Bat counts have been initiated in the town with expert talks on the bat population in the town being arranged & pamphlets produced for local schools. Pamphlets have also been produced on the Bee population & subsequently distributed to local national schools. In maintained areas we are purposely leaving patches to grow wild to encourage bees, Butterflies & wild flowers.

  • Painting of derelict buildings: Usually in conjunction with other voluntary groups as part of “Adopt a Plot”.

  • Renewal of Heritage Signs: Existing signs (there are 13 around town) on buildings were renewed/replaced due to weathering.
